Why Visit Copenhagen: The World’s Most Livable, Lovable City

Copenhagen has quietly—and now undeniably—become one of the world’s leading tourist destinations. Named the coolest city to visit by Lonely Planet, the Danish capital blends effortless style with daily practicality: you can walk or bike almost everywhere, the streets are clean, the people are friendly and speak excellent English, and the food, culture, and design scene are some of the best in the world. You can relax, be safe, and have fun in Wonderful Copenhagen.

Here are some recommendations

See the City From the Water

Begin with a canal tour to understand the city’s layout. Go with the Netto Boats—half the price of the other tours, same route, same views. They leave from Nyhavn and offer the perfect introduction to the harborside architecture and charming canals.

Take a Free Walking Tour

A free walking tour (tip: about 50 DKK / $8) gives you context, history, and plenty of recommendations from locals.

Bike Like a Copenhagener

Copenhagen is built for bikes. Many hotels offer them, but rental services—like Lime and Donkey Republic—make it easy to pick up a bike anywhere in the city. Cycling is the fastest and most authentic way to get around. Rental bikes are also available in bike shops, including for the famous Christiana Cargo Bike which can transport your whole family around town.

Tivoli Gardens

The iconic amusement park which inspired Walt Disney lies in the center of town. It offers entertainment, food, and fun for the whole family. It is decorated for the seasons at Christmas, Easter, and Halloween.

Museums Worth Your Time

Copenhagen has many, but if you must prioritize:

Parliament and the Round Tower

Visit the Danish Parliament (Christiansborg) for sweeping views and even Viking ruins underneath. You can also visit the cafe restaurant in the tower of the Parliament. If you’re short on time, the Round Tower offers a quick, scenic climb and excellent city panoramas.

Food: Classic, Creative, and Always Delicious

Day Trips and What to Skip

Roskilde (Highly Recommended)

If you have more than two days, visit Roskilde by train. Highlights:

  • The Cathedral, resting place of Danish monarchs for 1,000 years.
  • The Viking Ship Museum, with reconstructed longships and a great waterfront restaurant next door.

Malmö

Many Americans cross the bridge to “tick Sweden off the list,” but there’s far more to see on the Danish side. Even Swedes prefer Copenhagen for cultural outings, shopping, and food.

Why Copenhagen Is Special

Copenhagen excels at the things that matter to travelers: livability, beauty, simplicity, and warmth. It is walkable, bikeable, safe, elegant, and delightfully human-scaled. The city blends historic charm with leading-edge design; the culture is relaxed yet refined; and everywhere you turn, there’s good food, good coffee, and good conversation.
